Most youth ministry programs and families focus their Bible activities around the stories that children know and love, but what about a new look at the Nativity? In this article, Sunday school teachers and parents get some fresh ideas about teaching Jesus' birth.

Sunday school teachers and parents can set the scene of the Nativity by helping students understand where it took place. Grab a globe or large world map that many children can see. If the room is hooked up with technology, pull up Google Maps or, even better, Google Earth. Show children the places talked about in the Nativity story - Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Nazareth.

Teachers or parents can play a short game before this if desired, to see if any kids can find Bethlehem on a map. Ask kids if they know where Jesus was born. When you get the right answer, ask them if they know what country Bethlehem is in. If anyone gets that answer right, see if they can find it on a map.

What was the weather like?

Many of us in the United States associate Christmas and the birth of Jesus with snow and cold weather, but what was the weather really like when Jesus was born?

Teachers and parents can help students identify the climate of Israel and Palestine through web searches and encyclopedia usage. If possible, print off a large map of the area or ask an artistic child to draw a rough sketch of the countries and territories.

Once this poster is finished, ask students to brainstorm what kind of weather they associate with the temperature in Bethlehem in December, which averages about 45 degrees Fahrenheit, and is often rainy. Students can write down adjectives they associate with the type of weather Mary and Joseph might have experienced when Jesus was born, and tape them to the poster.

How would you announce it?

If Jesus were born today, what would the birth announcement say? Ask children with younger siblings if they remember their parents sending out a birth announcement when the new baby was born. If anyone remembers, ask them what it said and who they sent it to.

Explain the purpose of a birth announcement, and ask students to help draft an announcement for Jesus. Then, ask students to help create a list of people who you should send the announcement to. Should the President receive it? What about the Pope? How about leaders from other religions?

When drafting this list, teachers and parents can explain briefly how other religions view Jesus. It is important that students understand that Jesus is not just an important person in Christianity, but that he is recognized in Islam and Judaism as well.
